Canadian University Degree Apostilled for Revalidation in Mexico

If you studied in Canada and will revalidate with the SEP or your state’s education authority, your degree and transcript need notarial certification, the apostille from the province or Global Affairs Canada, and a Spanish translation. We coordinate the file so you can start the revalidation.

Which Mexican offices ask for this document

These are the most common procedures; the receiving office may ask for more:

Revalidación de estudios (higher or upper-secondary education)

Revalidation of Studies Completed in the U.S. or Canada

Office: Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) or the state education authority
  • Degree or diploma and transcript, apostilled by the state or province where they were issued or notarized.
  • Spanish translation of both documents when they are not in Spanish.
  • The apostille is not the revalidation: the SEP or state authority compares the curriculum and decides separately.
⏱ Validity: Degrees and transcripts do not expire.
Hiring, volunteering or visa applications that require a criminal record check

Employment, International Schools and Visas for Other Countries

Office: Employers, international schools and other countries’ consulates in Mexico
  • A national, fingerprint-based record check: the FBI report (U.S.) or the RCMP certificate (Canada).
  • Many institutions want it apostilled; some other countries’ consulates do not require an apostille. Check before you apply.
  • The check usually has to be no more than 3 to 6 months old.
⏱ Validity: Issuance within the last 3 to 6 months is the usual requirement.

Which version works and which does not

An apostille can only go on a public document with the right signature and seal:

✓ Accepted versions
  • True copy certified by a Canadian notary, or by the registrar before a notary
✕ Versions that get rejected
  • Uncertified photocopies or student portal printouts
Variants of this document: University degree or college diploma with notarial certification · Official transcript with notarial certification
Step by step

How to prepare this document

Follow this order so the authority apostilles it and the Mexican office accepts it:

1

Notarial certification of the diploma and transcript in the relevant province.

2

Apostille from that province, if it has its own authority, or from Global Affairs Canada.

3

Spanish translation by a perito traductor (also needed if the document is in French).

4

Filing with the SEP or the state education authority.

Apostille route

Which authority apostilles your document?

The apostille comes from a specific office, depending on where the document was issued or signed. Pick your case:

Competent authority
✓ Confirmed route

Ontario Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery (Official Document Services)

Apostilled by Ontario Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery (Official Document Services) (Province of Ontario).

Important: Certificates must be certified copies issued by ServiceOntario (Office of the Registrar General). Notarial and academic documents must be signed before an Ontario notary. Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Quebec also apostille their own documents; documents from the other provinces and territories go through Global Affairs Canada. An apostille certifies the signature on the document, not the value of the studies. For a foreign degree to be valid in Mexico, revalidation with the SEP or the state education authority is a separate procedure. Canada has issued apostilles since January 11, 2024. An apostilled Canadian document no longer needs legalization at a Mexican consulate.

Translation

Translation by a perito traductor

Mexican offices usually ask for documents in English or French to be translated into Spanish by a perito traductor authorized by the state judiciary. The translation normally includes the apostille. Each office decides which peritos it accepts: some only take peritos from their own state.

✓ Before translating, we confirm with you which perito the office where you will file accepts.

Frequently asked questions

Apostille questions: University Diploma & Transcripts

I studied in Nova Scotia. Who apostilles my documents?

Global Affairs Canada, because Nova Scotia is not one of the provinces that apostille their own documents. Allow 20 to 25 business days for that apostille.

Can I notarize a degree from another province’s university in Ontario?

Generally the apostille follows the province of the notary who certifies the copy. We review your case before notarizing to avoid a rejection.

I studied in Canada. What do I need to revalidate in Mexico?

Usually a notarized diploma and transcript, apostilled by the province where they were notarized (or by Global Affairs Canada) and translated into Spanish. With those you start revalidation with the SEP or your state’s authority, which decides separately.
