Apostilles for U.S. Documents Used in Mexico
Which authority apostilles each U.S. document, which version of the document you need and the order of the steps so the Mexican office accepts it without objections.
First: is it a state or a federal document?
The United States has two levels of apostille. Documents from federal agencies and courts, such as the FBI report, can only be apostilled by the Department of State in Washington, D.C. State documents (certificates, state court orders, degrees, notarized documents) are apostilled by the Secretary of State of the state where they were issued or signed. Sending a document to the wrong office costs time and means starting over.
