What to know about Florida

Details about this authority that prevent rejections and wasted trips:
Point 1
Florida is the starting point for many retirees and families moving to the Yucatán Peninsula and the Mexican Caribbean: Mérida, Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum.
Point 2
If your spouse applies for Mexican residency as your family member (family unity), INM will ask for your marriage certificate apostilled and translated. In Florida that certificate is issued by the county Clerk of the Court or the Bureau of Vital Statistics.
Point 3
The state fee depends on who signed: $10 per notarized document and $20 when a Clerk of the Court certified it (divorce decrees, probate papers and county marriage certificates).
Point 4
Florida does not allow notaries to certify copies of vital records or public records, so a “notary-certified copy” of a certificate is not the way to get it apostilled.
Point 5
A mailed apostille takes 3–5 business days in Tallahassee; at the counter, the same day.

Notaries public (FL)

Requirements for powers of attorney, affidavits and certified copies signed in Florida:

  • Florida notaries cannot certify copies of birth, marriage or death certificates; order them from the Bureau of Vital Statistics, the county or the Clerk of the Court.
  • Florida allows remote online notarization through notaries registered for it. If you plan to use it for a power of attorney bound for Mexico, first confirm the Mexican notario will accept it.
  • Wills and powers of attorney signed in Florida are apostilled in Tallahassee on the strength of the Florida notary’s commission.

My Florida notary certified a copy of my birth certificate. Why can’t it be apostilled?
